Exhaust Brakes

Give Your Power Stroke a Brake!

BD Diesel Performance has been engineering and installing Power Stroke exhaust brakes ever since the first engines rolled off the production lines in 1994—in fact, we set the standards for the industry! Today, BD Diesel Performance not only offers its famous BD Brake for ’99-’01 7.3 liter applications, but is the FIRST and ONLY company to offer an exhaust brake for the 6.0 liter Power Stroke— both manual and automatic applications!

The BD Brake for the 6.0 Power Stroke kit features electronic controls that effectively communicate with the engine’s Variable Geometry Turbo and EGR valve. Automatic applications also include our Auto/Towloc system that increases the transmission clutch apply pressure, and holds the converter clutch engaged at a lower speed than would be possible with the stock configuration. Just push the Tow/Haul button and relax—the BD Brake will apply as the transmission downshifts, slowing down your 14,000 lb. load without ever having to touch the brake pedal!

The BD Brake offers retarding power without compromise. Our testing has revealed that the Power Stroke engines have an extremely durable top end, with hydraulic lifters that easily open 140-lb. valve springs. The 40 lbs. of backpressure the BD Brake generates is far below what this engine can handle, so there is no risk of “valve float.”

Designed for years of reliable operation, the BD Brake’s rugged cast-iron housing incorporates BD’s exclusive AlumiBronze bushing and piston ring-sealed butterfly shaft that has proven to stand up under the harsh, high-heat conditions of the exhaust environment.

BD’s exclusive Variable Orifice Technology utilizes an air cylinder on current models, or a spring-loaded piston in a powerful, three-inch vacuum cylinder on the earlier 7.3 engines to actuate the offset stainless steel butterfly valve. Exhaust backpressure is maintained at a maximum of 45 psi (180 retarding horsepower) throughout the engine’s working rpm range. If excessive backpressure develops, the valve opens automatically to regulate sufficient backpressure. The BD Brake provides superior retarding performance that starts at only 1200 rpm, with peak retarding power achieved by 1800 rpm! From there, it just holds on right through the rpm range.

BD Brake systems designed for earlier 7.3 liter trucks are actuated by vacuum, while later 7.3 and 6.0 liter trucks utilize air pressure from an on-board air compressor, included with the kit. All BD Brake kits come complete with all necessary hoses, brackets, mounting hardware and instructions.

Deep Sump Cooling Pans

Deep Sump Cooling pans BD Deep Sump Transmission Oil Pans are made with heavy duty 356T6 cast aluminum. They add strength and prevent the transmission case from flexing from high torque Diesel engines which causes internal oil leaks. Features and benefits include:

• Additional Oil capacity to assist in keeping the oil temperature at a proper operating level

• Embedded o-ring sealing surface on the Allison and Ford numbers prevents oil leakage.

• Zero-Leak Gold Port Magnetic entry plugs provide dependable no-leak protection

Exhaust Systems

PUT THE “POWER” BACK IN POWER STROKE WITH AN X-HALE EXHAUST SYSTEM

Whether you’ve got a 7.3 or 6.0 Ford Power Stroke diesel engine, BD’s X-Hale exhaust systems will improve the power, sound and appearance of your F250/F350 truck or Excursion SUV. These performance exhaust systems quicken turbo response for more power down low, while greater flow potential means big gains in the upper rpm range and reduced exhaust gas temperature. X-Hale stainless steel kits consist of seamless, mandrel-bent tubing, a high-flow polished stainless steel six-inch muffler and a polished stainless steel rolled exhaust tip. These systems are available in single and DUAL configurations to fit all ’99-’06 Power Stroke-equipped trucks. The Singles are easy to install but the Dual kits require a fully equipped exhaust shop for professional-looking results.

Our Aluminized kits for ’94-’97 applications feature a 3-inch round down pipe (a BD dealer install option), while ’99-1/2-’03 applications utilize a four-inch round down pipe that outflows the flat down pipes found in other “easy install” kits for these trucks.

As with all BD exhaust systems, you’ll get the most out of this installation with the addition of a BD X-Intake stainless steel cold air intake system and high-flow air filter. Ask a BD representative for details.

   

PressureLoc Transmission Controls

1995-2001 Ford E4OD & 4R100 Transmissions.
The BD PressureLoc plugs in and increases your transmissions hydraulic pressure to hold the clutch plates together to prevent slipping which results in over heating and premature wear.

Stock Ford automatic transmission pressures are not high enough at idle for exhaust brake applications or at light throttle position for stock and modified engine power.

Additional engine performance results in less throttle travel to achieve the same vehicle speed which results in less hydraulic pressure that is holding the clutch plates together. The PressureLoc increases the pressure every time the lock up clutch engages. This increases the pressure applied to all the clutches in the transmission.

Exhaust brakes engage when you have your foot off of the accelerator pedal and this is when transmission pressures are the lowest. When the convertor lock up clutch is engaged 100% of the retarding power can be transferred but the clutch applied pressure should be increased with a PressureLoc.

This new state of the art technology has been designed to easily plug into the transmission. It increases the pressure to a predetermined level rather than a percentage increase over the present level.

   

BD BrakeLoc

“Electronic” in this case, refers to simply connecting to the engine heat riser valve’s control wire and signaling to close the valve. A delay of 2-3 seconds occurs before the valve closes and exhaust backpressure builds to retard the engine revolutions vehicle speed. Automatic transmission equipped trucks have this function combined with the BD AutoLoc or TorqLoc computer. These trucks only require a basic wiring harness.

A stock automatic equipped Ford truck, prior to 1999, will disengage the convertor clutch when the accelerator pedal returns to idle, the brake pedal is touched or when the truck accelerates. Since 1999, the convertor clutch will remain engaged until the brake pedal is touched. When the convertor clutch is not engaged the engine free wheels and the engine rpm falls to idle with no transfer of retarding horsepower being achieved.

BD’s BrakeLoc computer is designed to close the heat riser valve on the Ford Powerstroke and will maintain convertor lock up until a pre-selected vehicle speed. The BrakeLoc improves retarding horsepower from 5 RHP, when the clutch is not engaged, to 200RHP when engaged.

BD advises the driver that this “electronic” brake results in a extreme amount of delay or distance before retarding occurs; the amount of retarding force is 30% less than vacuum engaged BD vacuum engaged brake and 10% of the stock Ford heat riser valves that stick or bind. BD recommends, for instant and superior retarding performance, the BD Vacuum Actuated, with a variable orifice butterfly exhaust brake kit, be installed. It does cost more because of the design and kit content but it is an engineered safer retarding device.
